Chickens are allowed in Montréal-Est, with conditions.

Permitted, under permit, since March 2020. Maximum 4 hens per principal residence. Roosters prohibited. Backyard of at least 100 m². Annual permit of $25 per coop, valid until April 30. Cap of 20 permits the first year, then 10 permits per year afterward.

Requirements

  • Hens must be permanently kept in a coop or enclosure meeting shade, heat/wind protection, and drainage standards.
  • The residence's backyard must be at least 100 m² in area.
  • The bylaw explicitly conditions hen-keeping on it also being authorized by the zoning bylaw in effect for that specific zone — not verified for every residential zone.
  • Permits are capped — maximum 20 permits in the first year (2020), then a maximum of 10 permits per year since.
  • Selling hens or hen products (eggs, meat, manure) is prohibited.
